Oxfam rallies for poverty action
In a recent report Oxfam said that it feels that developing countries need to provide free quality education, health care, clean water and sanitation to get its people out of poverty.
Research carried out for public interest revealed that nearly 4000 children die across the world every day for diarrhoea. Oxfam and WaterAid reported that there is a shortage of 4.25 million health workers globally and a shortage of 1.9 million teachers and 100 million children are not in primary school.
Barbara Stocking, director of Oxfam Great
She said developed countries have been known to give aid on a short term and project-by-project basis.
Ms Stocking said the organization’s report revealed the importance and impact that free and quality education, health care, clean water and sanitation can make in developing countries.
She said public provision is the only way to alleviate poverty in developing countries.
The organization wants all countries to have free and quality education at primary level, free and quality health care and subsidized and affordable sanitized water so that the poorest can access it.
Others like Ms Stocking believe that things can be done. The amount of money is not huge and many African countries are ready to commit to this. An additionally 47 billion dollars a year are needed to make this possible and Ms. Stocking believes that “"It will not happen tomorrow, it is going to take time and this is the moment to make it happen.”
